Trump Hints at 'Major Trade Deal' With 'Big, Respected Nation'
On Wednesday evening, President Trump hinted at an impending trade agreement announcement, roughly a month following his imposition of a 90-day truce on retaliatory tariffs and a 145 percent duty on goods from China.
"Major announcement at 10:00 AM tomorrow from The Oval Office about a significant trade deal with representatives of a large and highly esteemed country. This will be the first of many!!!" Trump stated. on Truth Social .
During the 90 days leading up to this period, which began on April 9 after a volatile week in the stock market and under pressure from both Republicans and financial leaders on Wall Street to slow down, the Trump administration held discussions with numerous trade allies. All countries except China face a 10 percent tariff.
On Tuesday, however, Trump played down the necessity of entering into trade agreements, informing journalists, "Signing deals isn't mandatory," adding that he could have had 25 concluded if desired. Additionally, he advised reporters to cease inquiries regarding the timing of potential deal signings.
Furthermore, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the administration is not currently involved in continuous negotiations with China. This clarification came after officials had indicated for several weeks that they were having discussions with Beijing aimed at reaching an agreement to reduce the 145 percent tariffs.
The U.S. Census Bureau along with the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reported on Tuesday about the trade deficit. increased during the initial three months , reporting a deficit of $140.5 billion in goods and services for March, which marks an 8 percent rise compared to the previous month.
Bessent last week suggested that discussions about tariffs were underway India might be nearing conclusion, with the addition that 17 talks "are currently underway."
At the time, he mentioned that discussions with Asian trading partners, which include South Korea and Japan, were the nearest to resulting in an agreement since these allies had been "the most cooperative" during the negotiation process.
