SEOUL, May 8 (Yonhap) — Data released on Thursday indicated that the sales of imported cars in South Korea dipped marginally compared to the previous year. However, environmentally friendly options like hybrid and electric vehicles made up an unprecedented 81% of all imports during the same period.

As reported by the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA), a total of 21,495 imported vehicles were newly registered in April, marking a decrease of 0.3 percent compared to the previous year.

KAIDA linked the reduction to increased prices and limited stock availability for specific brands.

BMW maintained the leading position with 6,710 vehicles sold, trailed by Mercedes-Benz, Tesla, and Lexus, which reported sales of 4,908, 1,447, and 1,353 units, respectively.

When considering the fuel types, hybrids topped the charts with 63.7 percent of sales, trailed closely by electric vehicles (EVs) and gasoline-powered cars, which made up 17.3 percent and 17.1 percent, respectively. Diesel variants represented only 1.9 percent of all imported vehicles.

Mercedes-Benz's E-Class led the sales charts individually by model line with 2,151 units sold. It was closely trailed by BMW’s 5 Series with 2,040 units and Tesla’s Model Y with 804 units each.
