IPL 2025 Suspended for a Week Due to Escalating India-Pakistan Tensions
IPL 2025 "Suspended 'effective immediately' for one week," stated BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia in an announcement made on Friday evening. This measure came about due to the escalating tensions across the border involving India and Pakistan.
Saikia stated in the release, “Subsequent information about the revised schedule and locations for the tournament will be disclosed as appropriate once we have conducted an extensive evaluation of circumstances through discussions with pertinent officials and parties involved.” He added, “Following thorough consultations with significant participants upon receiving feedback primarily from team owners—who expressed player concerns along with thoughts from broadcasters, advertisers, and supporters—the IPL Managing Committee reached this conclusion. While the BCCI has complete confidence in our military’s capabilities and readiness, they deemed it wise to prioritize the shared interests of everyone concerned.”
Following a conference call involving prominent BCCI members including Saikia and IPL chairperson Arun Dhumal, the choice to halt the IPL was made. Each franchise received notification prior to the official announcement being released at 2:40 PM IST. Teams had begun dispersing as athletes and their supporting personnel prepared to board the first available flights departing from and traveling within India.
The consensus among everyone on the conference call was clear: continuing with the IPL under present circumstances was deemed inappropriate.
The development occurred one day following the IPL's decision. abandon Thursday's match In the middle of the first innings between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC), travel arrangements were complicated due to the closure of airports in Dharamsala and surrounding regions. As a result, both teams’ players and supporting personnel moved from Dharamshala to Jalandhar via bus before catching a train bound for Delhi.
The IPL 2025 has completed 58 matches so far, accounting for an abandoned game in Dharamsala. The group stage still needs to conclude another dozen fixtures before moving on to the playoff rounds. Should the tournament not restart promptly, considering India’s upcoming five-Test series against England beginning on June 20, the earliest resumption could be in September. During this period, however, there will also be the Asia Cup scheduled.
This is an evolving narrative and gets updated continuously.
